SPECIAL RECREATION NEWSLETTER

VILLAGE OF ORLAND PARK RECREATION AND PARKS DEPARTMENT

FALL, 2002

The Village of Orland Park Recreation and Parks Department would like to welcome you to its 20th year of programs for special populations in the area. Any individual with a special need is invited to participate in any of the programs listed. Each program is led by a highly qualified instructor who is assisted by staff and volunteers. Staff ratio is determined by the special needs of each individual.

Orland Park Special Recreation provides leisure time activities for individuals with special needs and works to help each participant accomplish participation in all areas of recreation. Inclusion programming has made opportunities available for individuals with special needs to experience involvement in programming listed throughout the department's brochure. For more information regarding inclusion programming, please refer to our seasonal announcement section of our brochure. If you have any questions or program suggestions, please feel free to call me or Mike McNicholas at 403-PARK.

Special Olympic Medical Information

To participate in any Special Olympic Program, all forms should have been updated in August, 2002. Forms must be signed by a doctor and on file at the Recreation Department. Medical forms will be updated every two years starting in August 2002. If your athlete's medical form needs to be updated, please stop by the office and pick-up a form. You may cal Mike McNicholas at 403-6263 to confirm expiration dates.

Atlanto-Axial Instability

This medical concern requires programming precautions that may affect participation in specific programs that require extensive neck movement. If your child has Down Syndrome and you would like more information regarding Atlanto-Axial Instability, please contact the Special Recreation Supervisor at 403-PARK.

C.O.P.E.

All parents of children with physical exceptions are invited to participate in this support group. This group meets on the third Thursday of each month. For more information, please call Kathy Dorsey at 460-2079.

Inclusion for Individuals with Special Needs

If your child with special needs is interested in programs not offered in the special recreation newsletter, the Recreation & Parks Department encourages inclusion in the desired programs. Parents interested in an inclusion opportunity should enroll in the desired program first. Once registration is confirmed, you should then contact the Special Recreation Supervisor at 403-7275. An assessment meeting to discuss the program, adaptability and your child's needs will be scheduled. The meeting is essential for a successful experience for all involved. At this meeting, accommodations for your child in the desired program will be pursued. Failure to register first may result in the program filling to capacity without placement being possible. After the assessment meeting, if you feel the program is not appropriate for your child, you will receive a full refund.
